FLORI

In a team of two, I was tasked with designing an “enchanting experience” using smart technology. 

Our solution: a speaker featuring integrated motion sensing and interactive ambient lighting that dances with you, not the music.

Comprised of a portable speaker, detachable moving lights, and an at-home charging port, Flori enhances the music-listening experience wherever you are, however you want.

WHY FLORI? 

 
We were very interested in dancing and the communal aspect of music-listening, and felt that music was becoming more of a private/individual experience.

After a survey and some interviews, we found that most people only feel comfortable dancing alone or in anonymous situations like dark and crowded music venues and clubs.

How might we design a music-listening experience that fosters social connection by redefining interactions with our ambient environment?

IDEATION

Starting broad, we explored a wide range of different interactions between motion + music + lights. We started gravitating towards organic-inspired designs that could provide interesting movement that felt natural, while being aesthetically pleasing to fit into the home.

PROTOTYPING + ROUGH CAD

This exploration was very helpful in determining rough volume and formal aspects.

We learned from this study that we needed to simplify and abstract the form of the flower more, while keeping the complex/organic motion of the more literal and complicated designs.

MORE SKETCHING + 3D PRINT

Went back to sketching to figure out a flower-inspired design that was more geometric and aesthetically pleasing, and tested out several different “petal” shapes and sizes.

We then 3D printed a model that could be separated and have petals move to test out the user interactions and ensure sizing was appropriate.

UI

Because Flori is all about connection, a good app is necessary to facilitate that connection.

We wanted to include te ability to control the volume, color, and brightness, or relinquish control and allow your movements to control everything.

There is also the ability to connect with friends, start a party, view your dance history, and more.
